Brand New for 2026

A Pool Built for Everyone

Thanks to a substantial investment from the Department of Conservation and Recreation, Hall Memorial Pool has been completely rebuilt — not renovated. New basin, new deck, and a fully accessible design from the ground up.

🏊

The Pool

50 meters long and 18 meters wide, with 7 painted swim lanes. Depth ranges from 4 feet at the shallow end to 5'6" in the middle. No deep end, no diving board — designed for safe, open swim access for all ages and abilities.

Fully Accessible

The new pool is designed for everyone. Entry options include:

  • Accessible entry ramp
  • Pool stairs with double handrails
  • ADA-compliant pool lift
💦

Splash Pad

The splash pad opens June 30 — one day before the pool — and is included with pool admission at no extra charge. A great option for younger children who aren't ready for the full pool.

🚿

Locker Rooms & Showers

Separate men's and women's locker rooms are available on site, each with showers and changing areas. Both facilities are ADA accessible. Guests are required to shower before entering the pool.

🪑

What to Bring

We do not provide chairs or towels — families are encouraged to bring their own. There is plenty of space on the deck and in the picnic area to set up. Locker room storage is available on site.

In Honor Of

Staff Sergeant George John Hall

Hall Memorial Pool is named in honor of George John Hall, a Stoneham native and United States Army Staff Sergeant who was awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions during World War II.

Staff Sergeant George John Hall, U.S. Army Medal of Honor Recipient

Staff Sergeant George John Hall
U.S. Army · Medal of Honor Recipient

Born January 9, 1920 in Stoneham, Massachusetts. George John Hall served in Company B, 135th Infantry, 34th Infantry Division, U.S. Army during World War II. On May 23, 1944, near Anzio, Italy, Staff Sergeant Hall single-handedly eliminated two enemy machine gun positions and neutralized a third, allowing his company to advance while sustaining minimal casualties. He was severely wounded in the action and died on February 16, 1946. He is buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery in Stoneham. His Medal of Honor is held at Stoneham Town Hall.

The following citation is reproduced verbatim from the Congressional Medal of Honor Society.

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at risk of life above and beyond the call of duty. Attacking across flat, open terrain under direct enemy observation, S/Sgt. Hall's company was pinned down by grazing fire from three enemy machine guns and harassing sniper fire. S/Sgt. Hall volunteered to eliminate these obstacles in the path of advance. Crawling along a plowed furrow through furious machine-gun fire, he made his way to a point within hand-grenade range of one of the enemy positions. He pounded the enemy with four hand grenades, and when the smoke had died away, SSgt. Hall and two dead Germans occupied the position, while four of the enemy were crawling back to our lines as prisoners. Discovering a quantity of German potato-masher grenades in the position, S/Sgt. Hall engaged the second enemy nest in a deadly exchange of grenades. Each time he exposed himself to throw a grenade the Germans fired machine-gun bursts at him. The vicious duel finally ended in S/Sgt. Hall's favor with five of the enemy surrendered and five others lay dead. Turning his attention to the third machine gun, S/Sgt. Hall left his position and crawled along a furrow, the enemy firing frantically in a effort to halt him. As he neared his final objective, an enemy artillery concentration fell on the area, and S/Sgt. Hall's right leg was severed by a shell burst. With two enemy machine guns eliminated, his company was able to flank the third and continue its advance without incurring excessive casualties. S/Sgt. Hall's fearlessness, his determined fighting spirit, and his prodigious combat skill exemplify the heroic tradition of the American infantryman.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes — and don't wait until you're standing in line in the heat trying to create one on your phone. Every visitor needs a free RecDesk account before entry, no exceptions. Creating one takes a few minutes but also requires adding every person in your group as a household member and signing a liability waiver — none of which you want to be doing while your kids are asking when they can go swimming. Do it at home before you visit at bgcmetronorth.org/create.

The pool is 50 meters long and 18 meters wide, with 7 painted swim lanes. Depth ranges from 4 feet at the shallow end to 5'6" in the middle. There is no deep end and no diving board — intentionally designed for safe, open swim access for all ages.

We maintain strict safety standards that determine how many people can be in the pool at any given time, based on our staffing on that day. When we reach capacity, entry becomes one-in, one-out. On busy days we recommend arriving earlier in the day.

The pool and splash pad close immediately at the first sign of lightning or when rain becomes heavy enough to affect visibility in the water. The pool reopens 30 minutes after the last observed lightning strike. Closures and reopenings are communicated via social media and email — timing of those announcements varies depending on conditions. When in doubt, check our social media pages before heading out.

No food or drink is permitted on the pool deck. The designated picnic area is available for all snacks and meals. Sealed water bottles and milk for infants are the only exceptions allowed on deck. No glass of any kind is permitted anywhere on the property — including glass bottles, jars, and drinkware. The on-site snack shack carries snacks, drinks, and pool essentials including Goldfish, Pirate Booty Popcorn, Cheez-Its, Chips, Water, Swim Diapers, Towels, Goggles, and Sunscreen.

No. We do not provide chairs or towels on the pool deck. Families are encouraged to bring their own — there is plenty of space on the deck and in the picnic area to set up.

We offer three levels of instruction:

Beginner — Students develop comfort and confidence in the water while learning essential water safety skills. Focus on water adjustment, breath control, floating, and basic movement. Students are ready to move on when they can float and recover independently on front and back, glide and kick short distances, roll to their back to breathe, and tread water for 5–10 seconds.

Intermediate — Students build swimming proficiency through fundamental swim strokes. Focus on coordination, breathing, endurance, and water competency. Students are ready to move on when they can swim coordinated front and back crawl, tread water for 30 seconds, and swim 25 yards continuously.

Advanced — Students refine all major strokes, improve endurance and efficiency, and develop advanced aquatic skills including butterfly, flip turns, and fitness swimming. Students completing this level are prepared for competitive swimming and advanced aquatic activities.

Group lessons cover Beginner level only. Intermediate and advanced swimmers are best served by our private and semi-private lesson program — use the lesson selector above to find the right fit, or call us at (781) 481-9092.

Group swim lessons start at $11 per class for season pass holders ($88 for an 8-class session, $66 for a 6-class session) — priced well below typical private swim instruction rates in the area. Non-pass holder pricing is $16.50 per class. A season pass starts at just $100 and unlocks pass holder pricing on every lesson you register for, in addition to unlimited pool access all summer. Private and semi-private lessons are also available for families who want one-on-one instruction or a more flexible schedule; full pricing is listed in the Swim Lessons section above.

Weather cancellations are made up the following Monday at the same time. If the Monday makeup is also cancelled, it rolls to the next available Monday. If cancellations exceed available makeup slots, remaining classes are refunded on a per-class basis. Personal absences do not receive a makeup, refund, or credit.

Season pool passes are non-refundable. Group and private lesson fees are non-refundable for personal absences. Weather cancellations are made up on available Mondays; any unrecoverable classes are refunded on a per-class basis.
